Jacob Bunce & Mrs. Martha Bunce (6G Grandparents)

Jacob Bunce Birth 22 May 1715 Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut Death Aft 1779 ,, New York Martha Bunce Birth Abt 1718 , Litchfield, Connecticut Death 19 DEC 1759 Canaan twp, Litchfield, Connecticut ---- http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bbunce77/ThomasBunce2.html ---- Jacob Bunce, baptized 22 May 1715 in Wethersfield, Hartford Co., Connecticut, worked as a blacksmith, married (1) about 1740, in Cornwall, Connecticut, Martha _____, who died 19 Dec 1759, Canaan, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, married (2) 4 Aug 1760, in Canaan, Connecticut, Hope Graves. Jacob died New York?. In a Nov. 1975 letter from Mrs. Alice K. Howard, who wrote a manuscript on the Genealogy of the family of Thomas Bunce of Hartford, Jacob Bunce moved from Wethersfield, Conn., to Canaan, Conn. where his 6 children by his first wife, Martha ______, were born and where Martha d. in 1759, and Jacob married his second wife Hope Graves in 1760. The family then moved to Norfolk, Conn. in 1761, after which Mrs. Howard lost track of them. According to a later letter from Russell E. Bidlack to Bonnie Bunce dated 13 Mar 1988, the family then removed to King's District, Albany Co., New York about 1770, as Jacob Bunce was taxed there in 1779. (King's District is now the Towns of Lebanon and Canaan, Columbia Co., New York, which border Hillsdale, N.Y., and Hillsdale is where the family of my Peter Bunce, Sr. resided at the time of the 1810 census). Mr. Bidlack also stated he thought the father of Hope Graves, was Joseph Graves, later of Canaan, New York. At the present time there is a highway that connects Canaan, Connecticut to Albany, and many of today's roads take the same routes used in earlier times. Children by Martha _____: Isaiah Bunce born Litchfield Co., Connecticut. This Isaiah Bunce may be the one whose name was found in the book, American State Papers, Vol. 9, Invalid Pension Claims [Revolutionary War], pp. 64 & 89: List of Invalid Pensioners examined by the Judges of the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of Connecticut, held at New Haven, in May and October, 1792 No. 7 Rank: Private Name: Isaiah Bunce 7th Regiment, Col. Swift's Regiment Disability: Disabled while in the service of the United States, by a wound he received in his leg, which has occasioned an ulcer, which renders him incapable of performing his accustomed labor. When and Where Disabled: April 27, 1777, New Milford. Residence: Washington To What Pension Entitled: three-fourths Enlisted: March 26, 1777 for 3 years Discharged: March 31, 1780 Date of Certificate: Oct. 4, 1792. Monthly allowance: $4.44 1/3. Arrears: $100.00 No remarks. Additionally, in an entry on the Gencircles website, there is an entry for him as having had a wife named Damaria Mack, by whom he was said to have had 4 daughters: Polly, Patience, Lucy and Mary. He was said to have died at Washington, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, on 24 May 1804. Jonas Bunce born 18 Mar 1740, Litchfield, Litchfield Co., Connecticut. His date of birth is recorded in the book, A Genealogical Register of the Inhabitants of the Town of Litchfield, Connecticut by George C. Woodruff. On p. 138 of the 1820 census record for Reading, Steuben Co., New York there is an entry for a man named Jonas Bunce. Reading later became what is today the towns of Barrington and Starkey, Yates Co., New York, where my Bunce and Kress ancestors lived. Additionally, the following census record was copied from: 1810 Census Reading, Steuben Co., New York. 1810 Census for Town of Reading, Steuben Co., New York, p. 399 Head of Household Males Females Age under 10 Age 10-15 Age 16-25 Age 26-44 Age 45 and over Age under 10 Age 10-15 Age 16-25 Age 26-44 Age 45 and over Bunce, Jonas 2 3 0 0 1 1 0 0 1 0 Other names on the same page of that census, who would have been Jonas' neighbors, include Abner Hurd, Philemon French, Caleb Fulkerson, Mathew Rice, Ezra Keeler, Timothy Hurd, John Sears, Andrew Boothe, Sherman Hurd, Conrad Royce and others. All of these names appear in the chapter on the Town of Starkey in Stafford C. Cleveland's History and Directory of Yates Co., New York, published 1873. The Jonas Bunce on the 1810 census for what is now the Town of Starkey, Yates Co., New York may have been a son of the one born in Connecticut, and perhaps a brother of my g.g.grandfather, Peter Bunce, since Peter and his family settled in Yates Co., New York in 1823. 26. John Bunce, born 18 Mar 1739. Abraham Bunce born 8 Nov 1747, Canaan, Litchfield Co., Connecticut. There is a record in the book, New York in the Revolution—as Colony and State (1775-1783), of a man named Abraham Bunce serving in the Revolutionary War in the Second Regiment under Col. Philip Van Cortland. A Daniel Bunce is listed as serving in the same regiment. Additionally, the name of "Abraham Bunts" appears on the 1790 census for Mohawk Town, Montgomery Co., New York, p. 110, with 1 free white of 16 years and over, 2 free white male under 16 and 5 white females. Montgomery County covered nearly half of New York state at that time; however, today there is the Town of Mohawk within Montgomery County. Also on that same census in same county and town were the names of Jacob Bun, John Peter Bun, Jacob Bun Junr., John Bun Junr., all with families. However, this surname "Bun" may have been confused with that of Pieter Quackenboss, who was also known as Peter Bont, since there were no stringent rules with respect to spelling at that early date. On the 1800 census index for New York state, on p. 186A reel 3, there is the record of an Abraham Bunts residing in the Town of Paris (now Trenton), Oneida Co., New York. There is no record for an Abraham Bunts in the 1810 NY census, but in the 1820 census index, there's a record of a man by that name residing in the Town of Wolcott, Seneca Co., but the Abraham Bunce, son of Jacob, would have been 73 years old at that time, but it's possible that he was still the head of a household. 27. Daniel Bunce, born 8 Jul 1749. Elizabeth Bunce. ---- Jacob BUNCE (son of John BUNCE and Abigail SANFORD) was born 22 May 1715 in Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, and died 1779 in New York. He married (1) Martha UNKNOWN on 1740 in Cornwall, Litchfield County, Connecticut. He married (2) Hope GRAVES on 1760 in Canaan Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut, daughter of Joseph GRAVES. More About Jacob BUNCE and Martha UNKNOWN: Marriage: 1740, Cornwall, Litchfield County, Connecticut.
