Joseph's other maternal great-grandparents were Thomas Dury and Elizabeth Bell. Thomas Dury was born 19 May 1767 at Washington, Durham, England to Thomas Dury Sr. and Dorothy Johnson, but he was christened at Golden Hole, Earsdon, Northumberland, England on 5 July 1767, which was across the Tyne close to North Shields. He met and manied Elizabeth Bell, who came from North Biddick, Washington, in Durham County and whose parents were John Bell and Elizabeth Taylor. She was christened there 13 May 1771.

Thomas and Elizabeth were married 26 July 1792. To this couple were born two daughters:

Dorothy Dury , b 11 May 1793, Oxclose, Washington, Durham, England; chr. 14 Jul 1793 in the same place; md. William Bowman, 16 May 1816 at Janow; and died in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, 11 Jul 1883 and buried on the 12th

Elizabeth Dury, b 27 Dec 1795, Oxclose, Washington, Durham, England; md. John Walker. Thomas Dury, Joseph's grandfather died and was buried in Washington, Durham, England on 22 November 1795, just a month before his last baby girl was born. Dorothy was married again to Robert Dennen or Denning on 21 October 1797 at Washington and had two more children:
