You're not supposed to give kids any opportunity to lie. (And I dn't even have my PhD...go figure) :) You are not supposed to say, "Did you eat your sister's candy?" You are supposed to say, "I am disappointed in you that you ate your sister's candy." Anytime a kid is confronted, they get scared because they are worried about the consequence of their actions in the first place, so they lie hoping that they won't get into trouble. What kind of PhD did you have, again????
