Psychologist Pet Peeve #4
Psychologists who try to put a positive spin on all feedback they provide a client...
For example, "If you were sitting in a room with 100 people, you would probably think to yourself, 'Man, I am the dumbest person and worst reader in the room.' But that isn't true. You are at the 2nd percentile and that means that there would likely be at least one other person in the room that read worse than you." :)

I'm just curious what you would say to that patient.
It does seem more kind to help people deal with reality instead of just painting an idealistic picture of it.
I would just tell him that he struggles with reading...that it is a limiting disability, and that he will probably always struggle at reading, although he can possibly improve some if he were willing to try remedial efforts (i.e., read children books) to get better...
The thing I thought was funny was the positive spin he was trying to put on it... :)
Or how about, "Wow, you really, really suck at reading. Man, I don't even know what to say. How are you going to make it in this world if you can't read? You may as well end it all right now. Here's a prescription for enough sleeping pills to OD on."
